GIANT MOON ON MONO LAKE - 6 MAY 2012
Mono Lake - Lee Vining, California, File # 1216656
Making my way home from Seattle by way of California. I haven't been up to Mono Lake is six years. It hasn't really changed. Coincidentally there was a relatively substantial astronomical event. The moon was very close to Earth. The news said it was 14% larger than normal. The illumination was 30% brighter than normal.
The sun was down about 15 minutes when this image was taken. As is usually the case with me, the best image of the shoot was the last. I packed up my gear right after taking this thinking my better pictures were shot earlier. Sometimes it good to just stay a little longer. As in this case, I almost gave up because it was already getting very dark and the moon was very bright. Through the magic of digital darkrooms, I was able to bring out the detail in the foreground without totally blowing out the moon.
