Great Egret Backlit Portrait - Bolsa Chica Nature Preserve, California
File #: 1920033
Nikon D500, 500mm f/4e AF-S at f/8.0, 1/500sec, handheld.
Just about annually I go to Bolsa Chica to see what's brewing for bird photography. It's a habit I've been exercising for a few years now. It's not really intentional but I think up in the desert in the winter, I kind of wonder what the birdies are doing while the rest of winter is raging.
This guy was along the bridge off the parking lot in Bolsa Chica Nature Preserve in Huntington Beach, California. I've probably shot Great Egrets there about 30 times over the years. In this case, I shot front facing images, then moved to side images with the nice backlit. This particular capture I was shooting handheld, which is very easy to do with this lens, even though it's a 500mm super-telephoto.
As you can tell, there's a lot of detail in this image. Lots of texture that's captured by this lens/camera combo. It's a fairly excellent setup.
