Incoming Puffin with Morning Catch - Grimsey Island, Iceland
Nikon D500, 500mm f/4e AFS, f/5, 1/2500sec, ISO 640
When you spend time with a colony of puffin’s you’ll begin to see patterns to their flight paths. After a while, you might observe they stick to those patterns as if they were on their own bird highway in the sky. This is good for photographers because if you didn’t get the in-flight bird picture you wanted at first, just wait because there will be another before too long.
I know lots of photographers struggle with in-flight imagery because the birds seem so unpredictable. When you’re shooting in places like Grimsey and Bosque del Apache in New Mexico, the opportunities are so vast, you can really practice your shooting technique. The first step it to see if there are patterns then with that knowledge try to anticipate where you want to shoot and look for birds flying towards that point. That’s what I did with this and all my other in-flight puffin images.
