Just got a new camera and tested it out in a very awesome photography place. Yes, pelicans were the primary subject.
I got Nikon’s new mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z7. Yes, my initial impressions are positive--just look at this picture. The image quality is superb, probably better than I expected. It’s very small. Totally adaptable to my old lenses. I’m completely looking forward to what Nikon will do with this camera’s very wide Z-mount with the brand new lenses
Right now, I don’t have any dedicated Z-mount lenses. I only have the FTZ adapter that allows me to mate all my older F-mount lenses to this camera essentially seamlessly. In fact more than seamlessly. It’s better than seamless.
For one improvement, the In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) removes hand shake for those lenses that done have built-in VR like my Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8. This ten year old lenses has new life with IBIS. Not only that, with the huge 46MP sensor, you can narrow the field of view through cropping to get very nice reach in an extremely small package.
Yes, I read about the auto-focus issues on the web before buying the camera. Yes, the AF is a bit of a mixed bag. It mostly works really well but the performance isn’t nearly as good as my D5. That only saying the Z7 auto performance isn’t like magic. But, it’s pretty good. But far the worse thing is choice for activating selective AF. Once it’s on, you have to hit a button to keep the camera from trying to track the point even well after pointing it the other way. The second unnatural “exit” button push is definitely not normal Nikon DSLR.
Excepting that interface, I can suffer through the relatively pedestrian AF performance. Just look at this image for example. It’s hand held with my long zoom and totally sharp. Pretty good performance to me.
The pelicans in La Jolla were great. Lots more images of them in the near future. This new mirrorless did great even in the rain. Yes, it the camera was almost thoroughly soaked. Good thing.
Cheers
Tom
