KOREA 2014, GETTING OUT THERE (DAY 1) - 29 October 2014
Cross Walk - Los Angeles, California
I just completed a trip to Korea for work. I've been there before but it's been years. In fact, this was the first time I'd been in Korea since I was last deployed there more than 20 years ago when I lived in Okinawa, Japan.
This trip was all for Test Pilot School. I and another instructor took four students to do their "capstone" qual which is supposed to be the most "epic" single-look qual event in their TPS experience.
What is an "epic" single=look qual? Single-look quals are individual flights in aircraft the students hadn't flown before. The point of the exercise for the students is to expand their horizons on how aircraft fly while simultaneously improving their confidence in working in these new environments and aircraft. The "epic" feature is related exposing the students to something especially unique and extraordinary. When I went to TPS 20 years ago, I went to the Empire Test Pilot School to fly the Jaguar. It was a most excellent experience.. For my students on this trip, Korea offered a very unique set of unique and extraordinary experiences as you'll see.
