Playboy Marfa - Marfa, Tx, File #1333257
Okay, I knew about the Marfa Prada sculpture before making the trip. I did not know about this sculpture. It's right there on the north side of the road about a mile west of Marfa. The interesting thing is it's quite controversial.
Controversy surrounds Playboy. It has it's entire history. Without getting into the inner meaning of the display, I'll suggest one sign of successful art is the conversation it starts. Boiled down, the question is where does advertising end and art begin. Good question. The issue is if this is advertising then like any billboard, permits are required and they apparently weren't obtained. If it's art, then it's simply open to opinion whether it's good or not.
Reading the news, it appears someone did some research and complained about the sculpture. (I'm using the word sculpture because I do think this is art) The Texas Department of Transportation decided to issue an order for the owners to remove it in 45 days.
A totally separate question beyond whether this is art or not is whether this is "good" or not.
